Goodbye Stresa, hello stress!

We left Stresa, heading for Strasbourg, early this morning - the trip should have taken about 5 hours but, Due to the San Bernadino Tunnel being closed we lost 3 hours travelling through Switzerland taking the Gotthard Road Tunnel :-(

View from the car as we 'cruised' through Switzerland.

View of the queue for the tunnel from the front of the car!

Still, we made it to Strasbourg OK, checked in at the hotel and were told "the restaurant is closed, we recommend The Hippopotamus, just down the road" - so off we went! Click here to try it yourself :-)

Paris tomorrow - that should be fun.

Stresa - August 24th

Arrive in Stresa last night after an interesting drive from Ferrari - everyone on the Autostrada thinks they drive a Ferrari, even if they're driving a 20 year old Fiat 500!

Stresa is a beautiful place - well worth the drive.

TP being tempted by some cakes.

He managed to resist for 5 milliseconds.

The evidence - mind you, Mum and Dad helped polish off the rest in record time.

View from the hotel balcony.

Another view from the hotel grounds.

Il museo ufficiale TFerrari - August 23rd

The cars pretty much speak for themselves - if it hadn't been for SatNav though we would never have found the place. We also took a guided bus tour of the factory and test track - but, as we weren't allowed to take any pictures (something to do with secret manufacturing processes and cars being tested) we can't show you what it looked like :-(

Lot's of people outside the museum trying to get you to go for a ride in a Ferrari - looked expensive and had nothing to do with the museum.

The Hall of Champions

TP with a couple of F1 Championship Winning cars!

A walk round verona and another opera (Nabucco).

A cool dude,

a cool dudette........

and Dad trying to be cool ;-)

Juliet's tomb.

The lid was stolen piece by piece over a number of years to make  jewellery.

The 'gong lady' - she announces the start of the opera and the end of every interval.

A market in down town Verona.
The market restaurant with TP tucking into his 'ice tea'!

Is that the German world cup pundit I see under that pasta?
TP safely chained up for the night.

Then it's good night Verona.

Verona........continued

A view of Verona 'old town' from what used to be an Austrian garrison - ideal for shelling the locals if they were getting out of hand. If you look closely, when walking around, you can still see the holes left in buildings from cannon balls.

We visited Juliet's house below;

The locks are left in Juliet's garden by couples looking for a long lasting relationship - it's a long standing tradition and you write your names on the padlock and throw away the key - the souvenir shop next door does a good job of keeping the tradition going!

As you enter the courtyard there are two 'white' walls where graffiti, expressing terms of endearment (such as "come on you Reds") are encouraged.

The actual balcony .
Mrs P's two Romeos.

On to the opera - tonight it's Romeo and Juliet (there's a coincidence for you - strange or what ;-))

The opera started at 21:00 and the temperature was still around 35 degrees C - felt like 40+.

It takes place in what was a Roman amphitheatre - now a very nice business!

Bring on the lions and Christians!

The grand finale - TP reckoned it took Juliet far too long to die. She kept singing for the best part of an hour after stabbing herself through the heart. The opera ran for over three hours - including breaks.
